Description
COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course explores the history of women in America from the 1600s to the present, especially the political struggle to gain increased civil and political rights. Using primary source materials from across this timespan, and multiple perspectives from interdisciplinary gender scholars, to dissect change over time, this course will consider the myriad ways women have helped to shape the course of United States history. This also includes a targeted examination of the role of women in the development of religious practices and social reform in American history. Our five basic themes include:
- Family/household/sexuality
- Labor/economy/class
- Race/ethnicity/religion
- Law and citizenship
- The global context of U.S. women’s history
